The love legend of Sassi and Punnuñ is often used in Punjabi poetry as a metaphor for being careful in love. As the CokeStudio puts it, “the poet makes a mystical, poetic statement – warning of the tragic consequences of the smallest measure of complacency on the Path of Love, which is fraught with danger and deception.”
The background: Punnuñ’s family was against their union as he was a prince but Sassi daughter of a washerman. Punnuñ decides to go against their will. His brothers come to the wedding and pretend to be with him. But on the night of the wedding, they abduct him when Sassi falls asleep. The next morning, when Sassi finds out, she run towards the Punnuñ’s town, Kech and dies in the desert of Thal.

This poem was written by Bari Nizami, a beat poet of Punjab’s Thal area. Kindly mention his name in lyrics section instead of ‘folk song’. His poetry has been sung by numerous artists including Nusrat Sb (wighar gyee ay thoray dinan tu etc) and Ghulam Ali. Plus Sassi died in the desert of Thar and not Thal.
