In the Footsteps of Ranjha

I wish to follow the footsteps of Ranjha to experience the legend that has kept Punjab enchanted for centuries. Yes, this is not that age anymore, I won’t find a Heer when I cross Chenab, but I know this will be one hell of a journey, something to remember for life.

Just imagine: you begin at the village where Ranjha was born and grew up, leave for Heer’s village, cross the river Chenab at the same place the same way (boat), spend some time in Heer’s homeland, then go to the Balnath Hill, and eventually to the village of Heer’s in-laws. This is the path Ranjha walked.

Right now I’m busy finishing the research work on the legend of Mirza and SahibaN, would probably leave on this ‘exploration’ after August this year. Do YOU want to accompany me? Leave a message in the comments.

Here’s a pictorial summary of our ‘journey of love’:

1. Takht Hazara

The land where Ranjha was born and spent his childhood and early youth.

2. Midh Ranjha

The place where Ranjha took rest before crossing the river Chenab.

3. Crossing the River Chenab

This is where Ranjha requested Luddan, the boatman, to get him across Chenab.

4. Arrival at Jhang

Heer’s home land where Ranjha would spend next 12 years of his life.

5. Tilla Jogian

When Heer is forced into marrying someone from Rangpur, Ranjha heads over to Balnath to be accepted as Jogi.

6. Rangpur

Eventually Balnath allows him to go to the village of Heer’s in-laws.

7. One, Forever

After they elope and are caught, Ranjha makes his case for Heer. Finally, both the families agree to a wedding. But Heer’s uncle Kaidu poisons her and she dies. As soon as they Ranjha is told, he takes his last breath. Both are buried in one grave in the ancient graveyard outside Jhang.
