Damodar Das

Damodar Das was a Punjabi poet from Jhang (Punjab) known for his poetic composition of the legend of Heer Ranjha (called ‘Heer Damodar’). He was a contemporary of Heer-Ranjha and witnessed the events. In fact, he mentions it several times in his Heer:

Aakh Damodar main akheeN ditha jo sar saleti de aai

Aakh Damodar main akheeN ditha laggi hovan ladai

Aakh Damodar main akheeN ditha jo sabh kook khloi

Damodar was born in the Lodhi era and died in Akbar era. R. C. temple calls him Patwari but he was a shopkeeper in Heer’s village. He has mentioned Akbar many times.

Heer Damodar

Heer Damodar consists of 991 stanzas, narration is simple and clean, dialect is Lehndi, and the composition itself is beautiful.
