During the period, 1979-80 (after he was long gone), I had the privilege to visit some of the places, the City of Batala, the Baring Union Christian College, where he spent a lot of time ( and Boys’ Hostel), his house, the room that he is said to have spent extensive periods in. I did have the privilege of speaking with several people (including the cook Rakkha at the Boys’ Hostel). He must have been an unusual man, decades ahead of his time..I am privileged to have experienced the locales, the air, whether and the cultural nuances that so prominently pervade most of his poetry. I completed my Master’s Degree in English Literature from the Baring Union Christian College in 1981 before I migrated to Canada. I have been back to Batala, several times since just to feel the vibes, if any. Not much is left anymore (I last went in 2003.
