Asaan tay marna joban rutay
By Nabeel Anwar Dhakku
BEFORE proceeding let me first confess that I’m not a scholar or critic of Punjabi Poetry rather I’m a neophyte sailor having a little mental capacity who was bound to fall in the mystic and unfathomable sea of Punjabi Poetry as poetry sooths me in the dark of night which has been stinging me for last few months. Being a native of Chakwal the birth place of Indian Prime Minister and his spouse I could fathom any piece of Punjabi poetry as it’s my mother tongue but I fail to fathom the sheer indifference and callousness towards this Great Language of world meted out by its very own speakers living in that Punjab whose identities are Waris Shah, Bhulhay Shah, Mian Mohammad Bakhsh and many more.
Life, “a walking shadow”, (according to Shakespeare), is fraught with appalling incidents and also pregnant with happy accidents. A happy accident which met me recently has rendered me weired by its magical influence. It was a usual hot day of June 29 when I was going to drop friend Hassan Liaquat (a singer and poet deprived of eyesight but endowed with inner sight, living in shadows and awaits for Yusuf Salahuddin’s kind attention) after hosting a seminar held at Chakwal Press Club in the honour of great but less remembered Urdu poet Majeed Amjad. “Who is your favourite poet”, I asked Hassan. “Shiv Kumar Batalvi is my best”, he named that person whom I did not know till that moment. An urge to read Shiv Kumar reared its head in my heart. But it was faded away after a couple of days, thanks to the cruel business of present day life.
On July 12 sitting in Sabzi Mandi (Vegetable Market) with my Murshed, Prof Sada Hussain, who teaches English Literature at Government College Chakwal, our conversation about to translate one language into another anncored on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s work passing by usual topics such as rising extremism in our society, threat to liberals, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan’s letter published by Washington Post, Kamran Shafi’s excellent article on this topic and continuous loot and plunder by politicians, generals and industrialists.
“One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Marquez has been translated into Urdu by two different writers but the translation loses the originality and real charm”, Murshed informs me. “Is there anyone who could translate this, “Maaey nee maaey mairay geetaan day nainaan wich birhon dee rarak poway”, he goes on. This Immortal song was born by the boundless genius of Immortal Shiv Kumar sung by Immortal Nusrat is one of my night companions for last two years. But I did not know about its creator until my Murshed told me.
After departing I rushed to Youtube and wrote “Shiv Kumar poetry” in the little box and clicked it. A bunch of songs and ghazals of Shiv sung by Timeless Voices like Jagjeet Singh, Kuldeep Deepak and Hans Raj greeted me. An interview of Shiv also appeared. When I listened “Maaey nee maaey main ik Shikra yar banraeyaa” (Sorry I can’t translate it in English as Oxford Advance Learners Dictionary looks sterile) in the fascinating Timeless Voices in the form of Jagjeet and Hans I was spellbound. Jagjeet and Hans both have their own charm and magic. Kuldeep’s “Toon vidah hoiyon” is matchless. Hans Raj also did justice to this ghazal. I downloaded all songs and ghazals of Shiv available at Youtube. The next thing which I had to do was to get the book of Shiv. I went to Kashmeer Book Depot (the sole literary house in Chakwal) but in vain. I called friend Hassan and asked him about the book. He said that his father Ch. Liaquat Ali had that book. Thus I got “Kuliyat-e-Shiv.
Shiv’s poetry made me fallen in love with it. It does not let me sleep throughout the night. Due to awakening for last ten days my eyes are swollen but I do not feel sleep. O Shive though has given me satisfaction and peace. I did love for two times, first with a girl and second with Shiv’s poetry. The first love was unrequited and lost without any union. But the second love is giving pleasure and satisfaction to my heart and soul.
When I came to know that Shiv was born in Shakargarh (Sialkot) and was moved to India at the time of Bloody Partition, I could imagine the hardships that gory journey would have inflicted on Shiv and his family.
I’m not able to critically examine the poetry of Shiv but I would just say one thing that when it comes to romantic poetry, Shive appears above from John Keats, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Ahmad Faraz. Even Ghalib could not pick those things which Shiv did. His love for mother is evident from his every fourth or fifth poem. The painful complaints before mother can bee seen in “Maaey nee maaey mairay geetaan day nainaan”, Maaey nee maaey main ik Shikra yar banraeyaa”, “Maaey nee, dus mairiey maaey, is vidhwa rut da kee kariey”, and in other pieces like “Maan, “Main tay main etc. The metaphors and simles are matchless. Take for example the following verses from Shikra, “Nain odhay Chait dee aathan, Utay zulfi Sawan chhaaeya, Hothaan day wich Katten da kui dehon charhnay tay aayea” it goes on and on with such fetching and mystic metaphors from the Pure Life of The Pure Punjab.
Shiv said that “Asaan tay marna joban rutay” (We have to die in the prime of youth) and he did so by shunning this world in the age of 36 years. According to Wikipedia he died on July 23, 1973 but some books say that he passed away on July 13. Anyhow he left this world in his favourite month of Sawan just to make himself Immortal as my great teacher Ayaz Amir rightly amends Euripides quot as, “Whom the gods wish to immortalize they often cause to die very young”, (Dawn, January 16, 2004).
From this space I appeal to the governments of both severed Punjabs to take extraordinary steps to bring the people of both Punjabs closer. Only in this way the festered wounds of Bloody Partition could be healed. To understand the Bloody Partition just listen Afzal Saahir’s heart rendering account, “Pakistan dee war”. May I could cross Wahga border as my only dream is to visit Amritsar as I visit Rawalpindi or Islamabad.

Shiv is living through his immortal songs. But, here, I want to convey my thanks to Nabeel Anwar Dhakku (who wrote a long comment above) for his love and superb interpretation of Shiv’s poetry. I wish to visit Nankana Sahib one day like Nabeel wants to visit Amritsar

shiv was the ultimate philosopher of punjab.the depth of his agonies cannot be analysed. as he said in one of his lyrics that sanu lakhan da tan mil gaya , par ek da man ve na miliya , jo likhiya oh muqadar se , hathanh diya char lakiran hai, that means he was in search of perfect love where. his search for such kind of lover can be equated with a small poem as follows
ishaq allah di jaat hai
ishaq allah da rang
ishaq allah wazood hai
ishaq allah da rang.
what i mean he could not get that kind of real love and as a result of that he could feel the the real pain of love rejection.
shiv kumar …………….batalvi
